My SME partnered with Siyabonga Africa to support community-based bakery entrepreneurs through an Enterprise and Supplier Development programme. The project focuses on helping entrepreneurs establish sustainable businesses through structured business coaching, business strategy, branding, digital development, marketing and ongoing business support.
The project supports three community bakery businesses: Lindi’s Bakery in Sasolburg, Your Local Bakery in Soweto and Tembisa, and EcoBakery in Marikana.
Through a combination of entrepreneurship training and practical business development, My SME helps these businesses develop the knowledge, structure and tools needed to operate and grow within their communities.
The objective of the project was not simply to establish community bakeries, but to help entrepreneurs develop the business knowledge and practical foundations required to operate sustainably.
The entrepreneurs required support across several areas:
1. Business Knowledge
Understanding the fundamentals of running and managing a business.
2. Business Strategy
Developing clearer strategies around products, pricing, sales, customers and growth.
3. Professional Business Development
Creating professional branding, digital presence and marketing materials to establish each business in its local market.
4. Financial Understanding
Understanding costs, pricing, sales volumes, revenue and potential profitability.
5. Systems & Compliance
Putting practical business systems and the necessary compliance foundations in place.
The challenge was therefore bigger than simply starting a bakery. The focus was on creating businesses with the structure, knowledge and tools required for sustainable growth.
My SME implemented a structured Enterprise and Supplier Development approach that combined business coaching with practical business development.
Step 1 – Business Coaching
A 12-week coaching programme covered Business 101, pricing, sales, business strategy, branding, website development, marketing, product and service delivery, systemised management, legal requirements, business culture and HR, and setting business goals.
Step 2 – Business Strategy & Financial Understanding
Entrepreneurs were guided through their business models, products, pricing, costs, sales volumes and potential revenue and gross profit. This provided a clearer understanding of the commercial potential of each bakery.
Step 3 – Branding & Digital Development
My SME supported the businesses with logo options, one-page websites, WhatsApp images, flyers, shop signage, Google Business Profile and Maps setup, Facebook pages and social media profile optimisation.
Step 4 – Marketing & Business Presence
The businesses received practical marketing support designed to help establish their presence within their communities and make their products and services easier for local customers to find.
Step 5 – Ongoing Business Support
The programme provides continued guidance to help entrepreneurs apply their training, strengthen their business foundations and work towards sustainable growth.
Through the Siyakhula programme, three community bakeries were supported with structured business coaching, strategy, branding, digital development and ongoing business support.
The combined business models showed a projected annual sales potential of R2.21 million, with projected annual gross profit of approximately R1.46 million based on the supplied business and financial assumptions.
Beyond the financial projections, the programme helped each bakery establish stronger foundations through:

For the corporate sponsor, the programme provided a structured and measurable development journey, while the participating entrepreneurs received practical support designed around the realities of running a community business.
