Enterprise & Supplier Development for Mining Communities

Building Business Knowledge and Opportunities Through Practical Entrepreneurship Training

Campaign Overview

Supporting Enterprise Development in Mining Communities

Mining and development projects can create opportunities that extend beyond direct employment. Enterprise and Supplier Development programmes can help surrounding communities develop businesses that are better equipped to identify opportunities, understand their customers and participate more effectively in the local economy.

My SME partnered with Digby Wells to facilitate entrepreneurship and business-development training within mining communities in Limpopo. The project included training with community leadership structures and local business forums in Skimming and Leruleng.

The programme was designed to introduce participants to practical business principles that could be applied to their own businesses and community environments. Rather than focusing only on theory, the training encouraged participants to consider their local markets, customer needs, available resources and the opportunities that existed both within and beyond their immediate communities.

Key Results

Building Practical Business Knowledge

The project provided community entrepreneurs and business forum members with structured training across four core areas of business development:

  • 5-day entrepreneurship training workshop
  • In-person community training
  • Business manual
  • Business 101
  • Product & service development
  • Business strategy
  • Business model
  • 1–2 week programme
  • From R50,000 per project

The programme introduced participants to the fundamentals of starting and developing a business, while creating space to discuss real business challenges, customer markets, community purchasing behaviour and potential opportunities.

The Challenge

Creating Business Opportunities Within Mining Communities

Entrepreneurs in mining communities may have valuable skills, products, services and business ideas, but practical business knowledge is often needed to turn those opportunities into structured and sustainable businesses.

For an ESD programme to create meaningful development, entrepreneurs need more than exposure to the idea of starting a business. They need to understand how a business works, who their customers are, how their products or services create value, how they can develop a strategy and how the different parts of a business fit together.

The My SME programme therefore focused on building a practical foundation. Participants were introduced to business fundamentals, product and service development, business strategy and business models, while discussions were connected to the realities of their own communities.

Our Enterprise & Supplier Development Strategy

From Business Coaching to Ongoing Mentorship

My SME uses a structured approach that combines business coaching with practical business development.

Step 1 – Business Coaching
Entrepreneurs work through a structured 16-session programme covering the key areas of running a business.

Step 2 – Business Development
The entrepreneur’s business is developed through areas such as strategy, branding, website development, marketing and business systems.

Step 3 – Practical Support
For applicable ventures, My SME provides practical marketing and branding assets such as logos, flyers, menus and TV displays.

Step 4 – Weekly Mentorship
Ongoing mentorship helps entrepreneurs apply what they have learned and receive guidance as they develop their businesses.

Step 5 – Ongoing Development
The programme provides continued support as entrepreneurs work towards stronger business systems, financial understanding and sustainable growth.

The Results

Giving Community Entrepreneurs Practical Business Knowledge

The programme gave participants a structured introduction to the key principles involved in developing a business. Instead of treating entrepreneurship as a purely theoretical subject, the training encouraged participants to apply the concepts to their own circumstances and consider how they could use the knowledge within their businesses.

Discussions included practical challenges faced by businesses within communities, the importance of understanding customers and markets, community purchasing behaviour and opportunities available outside the immediate local environment.

For the business forums in Skimming and Leruleng, the training created a platform for participants to engage with business concepts, ask questions and consider how stronger business knowledge could contribute to enterprise development within their communities.

Project Impact

Supporting Local Entrepreneurs Through Enterprise Development

The project provided entrepreneurs and community business structures with practical business knowledge that could be applied beyond the training environment.

By focusing on business fundamentals, product and service development, strategy and business models, the programme helped create a stronger foundation for entrepreneurs to evaluate their ideas and make more informed business decisions.

For mining companies and consulting firms investing in community development, this type of ESD programme provides a structured way to support entrepreneurship by developing knowledge and business capability within surrounding communities.

The My SME Business Growth Journey

Turning Business Knowledge Into Practical Development

My SME approaches enterprise and supplier development as a journey that combines knowledge, strategy and practical application. Our role is to help entrepreneurs understand the principles behind a successful business and then apply those principles to their own circumstances.

Our broader approach connects:

Business Knowledge → Strategy → Product & Service Development → Business Model → Practical Application

This allows ESD programmes to move beyond simply providing training. Entrepreneurs are introduced to the different elements of a business and encouraged to consider how those elements work together within their own ventures.

Whether working with a corporate sponsor, mining company or community development partner, My SME can tailor the programme around the objectives of the project, the needs of the community and the development stage of the participating entrepreneurs. This aligns with My SME’s wider ESD approach, which focuses on business knowledge, strategy, sustainable business models and practical business development.

Conclusion
